About MMS

Maharashtra Mandal (Singapore) a. k. a. MMS is a non-profit social organization registered with the Registrar of Societies (ROS) in Singapore since August 1994. (UEN: S94SS0093G) MMS strives to organize events and activities, which give a feeling of belonging to the maharashtrian indian diaspora and hence make it easy for them to settle down in Singapore. Its principle objective is to cultivate artistic talent and to preserve/promote/share the culture & heritage among its members or other interested individuals.

MMS is self governed adhering to a well thought out and documented Constitution and a set of working guidelines. It is managed by an Executive Committee of 13 volunteer members, which includes a President, a Vice-President, a Secretary, an Assistant Secretary, a Treasurer, an Assistant  Treasurer, a Public Relations Officer and 6 Committee Members who are constitutionally elected annually by its members.

MMS’ prime aim is to do community building by providing a stage for showcasing member talent and also appreciating of the rich cultural heritage of Maharashtra, India and the world around us. Towards that goal, MMS organizes various cultural events and activities through the year, which include festivals celebrations, celebration of arts and also many social causes. MMS works closely with other social/cultural organizations in Singapore and participates in a variety of collaborative events that help our members to integrate with local diaspora and other Indian communities here. We also strive to be a part of many social and local causes that come its way and thus give back to the society in a small way.

MMS Celebrates festivals such as Sankrant, Gudhi Padwaa (New Year), Holi, Ganesh Festival, Navratra/Dasara, Kojagiri Pournima and Diwali annually. We also organize annual performing events such as a musical orchestra, a multi-act play and dance programs (all presented by local talent among its members and their children). An annual sports meet, blood donations, debate competitions, picnics, various enrichment workshops for kids and adults are organized through the year. It also organizes programs presented by visiting professional artists. About 50 to 500 members attend each of these programs. Maharashtra Mandal is invited to participate in various cultural showcases organized by various Singapore organizations where our members get to showcase their talent, culture and also do some social service.

Ganesh Festival is the most attended event of the year, which runs for 3 to 5 days. It includes Ganesh pratishthapana, daily Ganesh puja (arti), Ganapati atharvashirsh pathan, cultural programs of members, literary programs, concerts, mini-bazaar and Ganesh visarjan procession.

In 2011, MMS hosted an International Marathi Literature conference - a global event of eminent significance for the world of Marathi language. MMS also hosted the 2011-12 (annual) Singapore Gita Jayanti celebrations; this event is co-hosted by 35 other participating Indian community organizations in Singapore. In 2014 to commemorate the completion of 20 yrs of MMS, we organized an arts fest called Kala Mahotsav which comprised of a Marathi play by members Tarun Turk Mhatare Ark), a Marathi professional play from India (Thodese Logic, Thodese Magic starring Mohan Joshi) and a semi-classical concert by Pt Vijay Koparkar.

MMS runs a Marathi books library consisting of over 2000 books available to its members.

It publishes an E-magazine titled ‘Rutugandha’ (six editions per year) as well as an annual Ganeshotsav souvenir magazine called Smaranika (in print form). Members contribute their own literature and businesses contribute their advertisements to these publications, which reaches MMS email, Facebook audience and event attendees.

We also run a forum called ‘ShabdaGandha’ wherein our members, writers & poets come together every month to share their own literary creations with like-minded literary enthusiasts.

Swaragandha is a music lovers circle providing a platform to showcase musical talent within MMS community. Swaragandh also provides musical entertainment to music lovers by inviting overseas guest artists to perform under our banner.
